What Does 'Remain in Him' Mean? A Devotional on John 15:5

"I am the vine; you are the branches." — John 15:5

Few verses in Scripture carry the weight of John 15:5. In a single sentence, Jesus reframes everything — our identity, our purpose, our source of life. He doesn't say follow the vine. He says remain in it.

That word — remain — is doing a lot of work.

The Greek Behind the Word

The original Greek word is ménō (μένω), and it means to abide, to stay, to dwell. It's not a one-time decision. It's a posture. A continuous, active choosing to stay connected to the source of all life and fruitfulness.

Jesus uses it eleven times in John 15 alone. That kind of repetition in Scripture is never accidental. God is pressing something into us: staying connected to Him is the whole point.

What Happens When We Remain

Jesus is clear about the outcome: "Whoever remains in me and I in them will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."

Not little fruit. Not some fruit. Much fruit.

But notice the condition — it's not striving harder, performing better, or doing more. It's remaining. The branch doesn't manufacture fruit. It simply stays connected to the vine, and fruit is the natural result of that union.

This is the great reversal of the gospel: our fruitfulness is not a product of our effort. It's a product of our connection.

A Devotional Practice: Remaining Daily

So what does it look like to remain in Him today? A few anchors:

• Start in the Word. Before the noise of the day sets in, open Scripture. Let His words dwell in you richly (Colossians 3:16).
• Pray without ceasing. Remaining isn't a morning ritual — it's a continuous conversation. Talk to Him throughout your day.
• Return when you drift. The branch doesn't stay perfectly still. Neither will we. But the invitation is always open: come back. Remain.
• Let His love be your anchor. John 15:9 — "As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love." You are loved. Stay there.
